Wondering how much it costs to receive professional mentorship and support? Learn about the average investment for leadership performance coaching, plus how to know you are hiring the right coach, how to determine ROI, and the type of results to expect.

If you are a manager of teams, run a business, or are in a role where others depend on you so they can get their job to get done, you have a unique collection of challenges not every professional faces within their careers.  You are the CEOs, managers, and entrepreneurs who pass on your vision and skill to others.

Being the boss, or in business for yourself, sounds very important and rewarding – that is, until you are sitting in the driver’s seat.  Whether you have been a leader for decades, or are just starting your journey, you have likely felt a calling to grow your own personal and professional skillset to handle the wave of responsibility in your care.

Whether you are new to exploring the benefits of leadership performance coaching, or have tried it before, a big question that comes up is around the cost of executive training and if it is even worth it for leaders.

Just to reveal our bias in advance:  we believe leadership performance coaching is an excellent tool to gain a source of support, motivation, and accountability in your journey, and it is not exclusive to CEOs and managers.  Solo entrepreneurs, creatives, and career professionals also benefit from business coaching.

That being said, not every coaching model will be the right fit for every need, and there is such a wide range in performance coaching pricing that it can be difficult to determine what is a good value versus advice without substance.

To help you make the very best decision in the engagement you pursue, here are some expert tips on finding the right coaching for leadership challenges and the cost to expect.

How do you choose the type of leadership and business coaching you need?

There are many different ways to receive business coaching, as well as subject matter and intent for the guidance.  From online courses you purchase and complete at your own leisure to classes, you will likely be drawn to a particular format.

Our advice in this article centers on one-on-one business coaching and the cost and value of this type of mentorship relationship.  However, courses, classes, and different types of coaching all have their place in the landscape, and those methods of receiving instruction should not be discounted.

For a traditional business coaching relationship – where you work with an individual coach, or team…in person, or virtually – some common areas of focus are workflow optimization, effective leadership, strategic leadership, confidence, stress management, and more!  And all of these subjects are within the “Business Coaching” sphere.

One can already see how this gets confusing…you can get decision-fatigue just from considering what it is you even need help with!  As you seek help, you think…

“Am I bottlenecking, or is it a strategy issue for me?”

“Would I say my leadership power is weak and I need help there most?  With strategic leadership coaching?”

“What if I’m having issues in both workflow and confidence, as well as other areas?”

Ultimately, the key concern many executives and entrepreneurs share is one step back from areas like workflow and churn.

The key source of challenge is around making decisions.  The sheer number of choices and guidance we provide as leaders to our customers, our team, and even our families, takes away from the number of decisions we have left for our own work in our ‘decision bank’.

Leaders and team managers are often very wrapped up in helping those around them – so much so that their own work becomes heavy.  Issues like workflow bottlenecks with their output, high staff turnover, and endless churn start occurring as a ripple effect, not the main problem.

How does this insight relate to how you will choose the right leadership performance coach for your needs?

A clear point of connection with a business coach is if they understand your business, the model, and the stressors that can enter your day-to-day workflow.  But this is not enough to determine if they will be the right match to help you.

To make a final decision, listen to 1) the coach’s level of insight around the source of your problems and 2) producing a clear plan of action they can define.

Why are insight and planning ability important for leadership coaching?

Decision making as a leader is likely one of the reasons you are seeking out help from a business coach, as well as a desire to gain confidence, leadership presence, and a support-system.  But decision-paralysis can keep you from proceeding with guidance that will really help you change your career, and in a big way.

These two check-points as a final consideration when selecting a business coach can allow you to confidently move forward and know that you did your due-diligence before signing on.

The green-flag moment – selecting coaching for leadership growth:

On the flip-side, when you have a leadership performance coach in mind who already understands the challenges you face, can see deeper into your issue than you can, and has a plan of action to start solving the pain (that they share with you at the start), you have a winner!  This is an individual you can feel confident engaging, and they will likely make a meaningful difference in your immediate issue.

How to determine the ROI for one-on-one leadership coaching:

The ROI, or return on investment, you receive from some types of business coaching can be difficult to track.  This makes assessing the right price point tough to pin point for some professionals as well, especially with subjective areas of coaching like leadership effectiveness that are more felt than immediately trackable as a sale, or increased productivity.

For areas like business workflow coaching, ROI can be easy to spot within 1-2 quarters of implementing this relationship and ongoing guidance.  A workflow coach will go in and identify the sources of bottlenecks and redundancies, and they will slim down your processes to the most meaningful actions you can take.  As a result, you go faster, more gets done, more money made in a shorter amount of time, profits are up.

But what about coaching for organizational change, or communication coaching for difficult conversations?  Those are the types of coaching you feel as a leader, and the value of that skill and its place in your budget will depend on its level of importance to you.

For example, if you loathe confrontational conversations, but to lead your catering business, you need to be able to give instruction with confidence and have tough conversations with clients when needed so problems do not continue to build.

A communication coach on-demand and who specializes in conflict resolution could be a life-line to finding the words you need to handle these situations on auto-pilot and depersonalize the experience through practice.  BUT, they may not be worth $5K per quarter to keep on stand-by for the tough convos.

On the other hand, for the C-level executive who has a budget for outside consulting and continuing education resources may choose to allot this same $5K per quarter amount to the communications coach who is advising our caterer.  For this COO, the extra mind-power on the most stressful conversations in her day may be worth this expenditure.

The same problem-solving from the same individual makes a meaningful impact in both settings, but it may not be the right option for each budget.  In cases where the issue is more subjective, going by the amount of expendable income the coaching costs in relation to your overall budget is the best metric to guarantee you are not overspending.

How much does business development coaching cost?

Now for the real decision-maker – how much does leadership performance coaching cost?  Ultimately, we can understand the benefits as leaders, but if it is out of reach financially, that is a hard limiting factor to navigate.

On average, a single pro-rated business coaching session will cost anywhere from $200 to $500, though many coaches will bundle their one-on-one sessions by the month, or into packages and retainers.

For business workflow coaching, for example, a 3-6 month coaching engagement would be a good, initial baseline time-period to create improvement, and the cost would be around $2K – $8K per month

How to know business performance coaching was a success

After finishing a typical business coaching engagement (under a year), you will not be able to tell the long-term impact right away, as that takes months and years to fully manifest.

What you SHOULD have for quick insights into your progress is a small, but tangible metric (KPI) that you are trending in the right direction.  This data will also give you a quick indicator to tell if you are going back to previous habits, so you can course-correct.

For example, a common metric we use to measure the effectiveness of networking guidance and lead generation efforts is the number of meaningful conversations being completed.  We don’t count those that were barely passable as a “touch”.  That may mean 5 meaningful engagements this month are better than 15 contacts with 3 meaningful conversations the month before.  If this metric is going up, and we work to repair our “down-months” with engagement, results will occur in time.

In terms of investment, we believe business coaching is successful when you are achieving the goals you set out to reach and are left with peace of mind from the tools you gained.  If you were working on coaching for confidence as a leader and you are no longer ruminating over the next decision, that is a success.  You have so much quality time added back to your life that will keep your business moving forward.

Coaching for a leadership mindset is an undertaking, but should have ample reward you feel in the end – and see in your profit growth over time.
